DESCRIPTION:In recognition of the urgent need for greater international cooperation on environmental and health issues\, a consortium of organizations in the State of Michigan has organized a program designed to promote the development of a new level of cooperation between Michigan and China. \nThe program will introduce representatives of national and provincial governments\, environmentally concerned businesses and universities from China to the broad range of “green” business\, research and government sponsored programs which have potential for helping China manage its environmental challenges. \nThe State of Michigan\, under the leadership of Governor Jennifer Granholm\, has launched a broad policy initiative to help Michigan industry and universities become global leaders in providing answers to the challenges of climate change.  Michigan’s century old world class manufacturing expertise is  being redesigned to promote the “green economy.” Developing mutually beneficial economic relationships with China is a key component of achieving this goal.

SUMMARY:Workshop on Testing Trade Models with Labor Market Heterogeneity
DESCRIPTION:The Research Institute for Industrial Economics (IFN)\, The Leverhulme Centre for Research on Globalisation and Economic Policy and CIBER at Michigan State University has arranged a workshop on globalization and labor markets. Trade models with heterogeneous firms have been a major focus of research for the past decade. More recently\, some trade theorists have begun to enrich these models by incorporating heterogeneity in the labor market as well. Such research holds the potential to uncover connections between the nexus of worker and firm decisions with characteristics of the global environment. The idea of the workshop was to bring together a small group of theorists who are working on such models with empiricists who are familiar with matched worker-firm data sources.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jeong is an assistant professor of economics at Vanderbilt University.  He will present “Complementarity and Transition to Modern Economic Growth.”  This paper addresses an interesting question in economic development\, the nature of the transition to sustained economic growth.  He proposes and analyzes a new growth model that is able to generate a gradual transition to sustained growth.  He then estimates key model parameters using data from Thailand’s economic transition of 1976-1996\, and finally shows that model simulations replicate well Thailand’s economic transition.

DESCRIPTION:According to Lansing’s Refugee Development Center as many as 500 new arrivals from around the world resettle in Lansing\, which makes our community among the top 10 cities in the nation for global refugee resettlement. Mid-Michigan regionally gains 13\,000 international immigrants\, representing 20 ethnicities each year. \nThis fun\, family event shines a spotlight on Lansing’s diversity. Last year’s event featured over 25 exhibits and nearly 2\,000 people turned out to celebrate the rich multicultural heritage of our community.

DESCRIPTION:Technological advances in our global economy and free trade have created unparalleled opportunities for U.S. companies looking to expand products and services into the international marketplace. They have also created the need for a well-trained\, globally focused and educated workforce capable of supporting American business interests abroad. \nThe U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration\, in partnership with the Economic Development Administration\, the Minority Business Development Administration\, and other federal and regional strategic partners\, has organized this event to highlight the range of trade opportunities for U.S. businesses. Seminar participants will engage senior government representatives and leading experts from the private sector and academia on key issues related to the U.S. economy and its relationship to the global marketplace.  \nThe program includes keynote speakers\, panel discussions\, one-on-one meetings\, and valuable networking opportunities with representatives from government\, industry\, academia\, regional international trade associations and economic development organizations in Puerto Rico.
