SUMMARY:Is There An Energy-Efficiency Gap? Experimental Evidence from Indian Manufacturing Plants
DESCRIPTION:Nicholas Ryan is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Yale University. He has been a Cowles Foundation Fellow at Yale University (2014-15) and a Prize Fellow in Economics at Harvard University from 2012-2014. He received a PhD in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2012 and a BA in Economics summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania. He previously worked as a Research Associate in the Capital Markets group at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in Washington\, DC. Nick studies energy markets and environmental regulation in developing countries. Energy use enables high standards of living but rapid\, energy-intensive growth has caused many environmental problems in turn. Nicks research measures how energy use and pollution emissions respond to regulation and market incentives. His work includes empirical studies of the effect of power grid capacity on electricity prices\, how firms make decisions about energy-efficiency and how environmental regulation can be designed to best abate pollution at low social cost.

SUMMARY:What It Takes To Lead and Manage Multinational Firms in India in the Emerging Business Environment
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Raghunath Subramaniyam will talk about what it takes to lead and manage multinational firms in India? Within a few decades\, India will be the worlds most populous nation and one of its largest economies. But it is also a complex and challenging market. Many global companies are therefore cautious when it comes to investing in India. But India is not a market that can be ignored. A $2 trillion economy growing at 5-6%\, it is an important market. Even more importantly\, India is an archetype for most emerging markets\, many of which present similar challenges but not the same potential. The discussion will include findings of a detailed longitudinal study of a large MNC in healthcare focusing on their India and emerging markets operations. This study will be used to illustrate how a large MNC has retained strategic flexibility in its own specific ways of adapting to the emerging markets in Asia such as India. We will discuss the emerging business environment in \nIndia specifically with the changes in the government and its policies with specific focus on healthcare.
