The event will cover the basic concepts in exporting--from doing market research, to entering your target market, to the logistics and legalities of shipping your product overseas, and getting paid. This session will offer a wealth of information to those considering, or new to exporting, as well as some tips and ideas for those already exporting. The seminar will include case studies and interactive group discussions, as well as time for questions and answers. The workshop is designed for faculty and administrators considering or actively engaged in the internationalization of business courses, programs, and/or certifica tes on their campus. Modeled on the Biennial International Business Institute for Community College Faculty, this workshop aims to introduce participants to the knowledge and resources they need to internationalize general business courses and/or develop specialized international business courses at the two-year college level.

The primary goal of this session is to introduce participants to globalEDGE.msu.edu, the #1 international business resources site on the Internet (Google, 11/19/13). Participants will learn about the site and how it can help SBDCs, their staff, and their clients to better understand issues in international trade and business.After attending this session, participants should be knowledgeable about globalEDGE as an international business and trade resource and able to use the site for their own research, as well as direct clients to relevant portions of, and resource listings on, globalEDGE (according to client needs). Examples of such information might include trade contacts in each state, Diagnostic Tools, exporting tutorials, the online module series (especially the Basic Guide to Exporting modules), and trade statistics and cultural information on over 200 countries.

Speaker Mary D. KaneThe Global Business Club of Mid-Michigan is proud to work with the Lansing Regional Sister Cities Commission to host Mary D. Kane, President and CEO of Sister Cities International. Prior to joining Sister Cities International, Kane was Executive Director with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, where she was responsible for identifying and building business partnerships and strategic alliances for the Chamber. Kane conducted fact-finding visits to determine the special concerns of domestic and global corporations, explained what the Chamber was doing for them in Washington, D.C., and around the world, and secured their participation in the Chambers leadership program. Kane was also a senior advisor to the Business Civic Leadership Center, a nonprofit affiliate of the Chamber dedicated to improving business and society relations. During her tenure, Kane established the U.S. Chambers military and veterans initiative and was the spokesperson for the Campaign for Free Enterprise. Before joining the Chamber, Kane was the secretary of state in Maryland and a former assistant states attorney. As secretary of state, she was a member of Gov. Robert L. Ehrlichs Executive Council, where she was responsible for his Sub-Cabinet for International Affairs, the entity that coordinates and represents Maryland state and business initiatives around the world.
